Travis Heights

Hi. Morgan Smith here with the Austin Street Beat. Today we’re headed to one of oldest Neighborhoods in South Austin: Travis Heights. Travis Heights is one of the most sought-after neighborhoods in all of Austin. Originally developed for the city’s wealthy, its proximity to downtown and the South Congress district, its beautiful architecture and the laid back style of the residents all contribute to the many reasons this neighborhood has been popular since the 1920’s.

The South Congress district, known to locals as SoCo, hosts many restaurants and hotels that serve as a hangout for celebrities and have even been featured in cinema classics such as Quentin Tarantino’s Death Proof.

Visitors from all over the world travel to the South Congress Bridge over Lady Bird Lake to take in an evening view of bats as they emerge in dark clouds at sunset from March to November every year.

First Thursday is a popular monthly event that takes place along South Congress Avenue, beginning at Barton Springs Road and continuing to Elizabeth Street. Best described as a block party, the stores and restaurants extend their hours until late in the night. Local musicians play for the crowd, while independent vendors offer handcrafted jewelry, art, clothes and unique Austin artifacts.
Locals enjoy the many beautiful walking trails and the beautiful Fairview park. During hot Texas summers, Big Stacey Pool offers a refreshing respite to relax and cool off.

Travis Heights residents can be found walking, biking, and jogging in the neighborhood , working in their yards, or relaxing on their porches. Homes in the area range from beautiful craftsman styles with large covered porches to estate home to the clean lines of newer contemporary structures and range from $450,000 to over one million dollars.

Great food, eclectic shopping, minutes away from downtown, a quick walk to events on South Congress Avenue, and a short bike ride away from Zilker Park – Travis Heights has it all!
