Hi, this is Shannon Schmitz with The Austin Street Beat. Today, we’re talking about one of Austin’s most iconic, historic neighborhoods – Tarrytown.
Tarrytown is a beautiful and affluent neighborhood in West Austin. The neighborhood is known to be quiet, classy and clean. It is conveniently located just minutes from campus and 3 miles from downtown Austin. The neighborhood is bordered by Lake Austin on the west, 35th Street on the north, Mopac Expressway on the east and Lake Austin Boulevard on the south. Major roads in the area include Exposition Boulevard, Enfield Road and Windsor Road.
Tarrytown is known for its 100-year-old tree canopy and historic churches, homes, museums and businesses: like Tarrytown Pharmacy, Laguna Gloria and Tarrytown United Methodist Church. Residents have easy access to golf courses and country club services: Westwood Country Club and Lions Municipal Golf Course are both located here. On the northwest side, lies Mt. Bonnell, a beautiful park with a long stairway to the “best view in Austin.”
Lake Austin flows along the west side of Tarrytown, and great lakefront amenities like Westwood Boat Club, Lake Austin Marina and Walsh Boat Landing and Center, which is home to Austin staple restaurant, Hula Hut. There are two charming shopping villages within the neighborhood (Tarrytown Center and Casis Village), and proximity to downtown means residents have easy access to just about any other services they may need. Triangle Park, Reed Park and West Enfield Park provide lots of green space for sports, picnicking, family fun or Fido, and Mayfield Park and Preserve is a 22-acre park that offers beautiful gardens, colorful peacocks and ponds with water lilies.
The Ann & Roy Butler Hike & Bike Trail on Lady Bird Lake, along the shores of Lake Austin is just east of Tarrytown and offers miles of water view and city view trails that are always filled with Austin’s active human and pet populations. The lake also has a kayaking station, as well as opportunities for other sporting activities, like stand up paddle boarding and paddle boats.
Surrounded by lush foliage, Tarrytown has everything from 1920s cottages to new mansions, but it predominantly consists of large, historic homes. Real estate in Tarrytown tends to be pricey and in high demand, although there are several high-end apartment complexes and condominiums in Tarrytown that make it possible to live there for less. Residents are primarily families of all ages.
Tarrytown truly embodies the best of Austin living – it’s what many people picture when they dream about living here.
