Northwest Hills

Hi, this is Shannon Schmitz with the Austin Street Beat. We’ll be taking a tour of one of Austin’s favorite neighborhoods today: Northwest Hills.

Northwest Hills is located west of Mopac, and the Allandale and North Shoal Creek neighborhoods. The neighborhood is bounded to the south by RM 2222, Mesa Drive to the west and Spicewood Springs Road to the north. Northwest Hills is known as an affluent, close-in suburb with tall trees and exemplary schools. The area is a mere 10-15 minute commute to downtown – or just about anywhere you want to go in Austin!

As the name suggests Northwest Hills is big hills, winding streets and has many impressive views.  Many people consider this neighborhood to the dividing line between flat Austin and where “Hill Country” begins.

Amenities abound in this area with easy access to walking, hiking and biking trails, greenbelt and parks. Some of the best shopping and restaurants in Austin can be found just north of Northwest Hills in the Arboretum and the Domain shopping areas.

The majority of the homes were built in the late 1960s through the late 1970s, many ranch styles, a little soft contemporary as architects in the 70’s started to utilize a more modern design.

Most of the homes in Northwest Hills are built on limestone with many big rocks, cliffs, and soil that make for challenging gardening but also makes for beautiful landscape design opportunities.  There are fabulous views in Northwest Hills and ample green space. Bull Creek greenbelt is adored by residents and offers an unequaled hiking opportunity complete with miles of trails, swimming holes and waterfalls. Most Northwest Hills residents can walk to Bull Creek greenbelt access spots from their homes.
